In order to produce X-rays from multi-charged ions an Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Trap (ECRIT) was set up at the Paul-Scherrer-Institut (PSI, Villigen, Switzerland). It is of hybrid type, combining a superconducting split coil magnet, special iron inserts to achieve a suitable mirror field, and a permanent magnetic hexapole. The high frequency was provided by a 6.4 GHz microwave emitter. The X-rays were energy analysed by a Johann-type Bragg spectrometer having a resolution of about 0.4 eV. High intense X-ray spectra were obtained of multicharged F-like to He-like argon, sulfur and chlorine with one 1s hole. In particular, from He-like ions 1s2s 3S1→ 1s2 1S0 M1 and 1s2p 3P2→ 1s2 1S0 M2 transitions were observed with unprecedented statistics. The M1 lines allow the precise determination of the response function of the spherically bent Bragg crystals in the few keV range.
