Ultracold Rydberg Atoms in a Structured Environment — •Ivan C.H. Liu and Jan-Michael Rost — Max-Planck Institute for Physics of Complex Systems, Nöthnitzer Str. 38, D-011870, Dresden, Germany
We investigate the properties of a single Rydberg atom surrounded by regularly spaced groundstate atoms as created by an optical lattice. Interesting questions arise in the context of the recently discussed dipole blockade in ultracold gases [1,2], where a Rydberg atom is surrounded by an unstructured environment of gaseous atoms, for instance, how the angular momentum characteristics of the Rydberg wavefunction influence the range of the dipole blockade.
