Ion-energy distributions after Coulomb explosion of atomic clusters — •Md. Ranaul Islam, Ulf Saalmann, and Jan M Rost — MPI Physik komplexer Systeme, Nöthnitzer Str. 38, 01187 Dresden

In recent experiments the fragmentation dynamics of atomic clusters irradiated by strong laser pulses is studied. One of the basic observables measured are spectra of kinetic energy distributions of the ions emerging from the highly charged clusters. These distributions differ qualitatively from the one of a single cluster illuminated by a spatially homogeneous laser beam, the typical scenario of theoretical investigations. Using a simple analytical model for the Coulomb explosion we have found three main effects responsible for the discrepancy: (i) the spatial profile of the laser beam, (ii) the cluster size distribution in the experiment, and (iii) possible saturation effects in the ionization. Each of these effects leads to a characteristic modification of the ionic distribution which allows an interpretation of the measured spectra.
