The increasing interest in metallic nanoparticles demands development of novel particle-generating techniques. Especially for the deposition of nanoparticles on surfaces and for experiments investigating the interactions between free clusters and light, narrow beams with a high intensity are required.

The continously working arc cluster ion source ACIS has been advanced to produce intense beams of metal-clusters with a broad size-distribution from about 1 nm up to 20 nm. For the first time aerodynamic lenses were applied to collimate the particle-beam of metal clusters. Mass separation was accomplished by an electrostatic quadrupole filter. The influences of gas composition and aerodynamic devices on the particle-beam has been evaluated by energy- and time-of-flight-measurements. Furthermore, the deposition of clusters with in-situ controlled masses was attempted.
