Analytical Approach to Wave Packet Dynamics
of Laser-Driven Particles beyond the Dipole Approximation
— •Mario Verschl and Christoph Keitel — Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Saupfercheckweg 1, 69117 Heidelberg

An analytical approach to quantum mechanical wave packet dynamics of laser-driven particles is presented. The dynamics of an electron exposed to a linearly polarized plane wave of arbitrary shape is found by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The calculation includes effects of order 1/c, i.e. the magnetic field is accounted for. Effects like wave packet shearing and particle drift in laser propagation direction are recovered. Analytical expressions for the time-dependent widths of the wave packet and its orientation allow for a simple understanding of the wave packet dynamics in propagating laser fields.
