Photoassociation of ultra-cold atomic gases in tight traps — •Sergey Grishkevich und Alejandro Saenz — AG Moderne Optik, Institut für Physik, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Hausvogteiplatz 5-7, 10117 Berlin, Germany
Over the past few years there has been a rapidly increasing interest in the physics of cold atoms and molecules. This interest was stimulated by the observation of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute atomic gases. These atomic condensates exhibit many qualitatively new and fascinating features. One of them is the possibility for the atoms to form diatomic molecules. This process may be induced by photoassociation. In this process two colliding ground-state atoms absorb a photon and become a bound excited molecule. In the present work we investigate the influence of a trapping potential on the photoassociation process. As a specific example the formation of 6Li2 molecules is considered. More specifically, photoassociation of spin-polarized 6Li atoms (interacting via the a 3Σu+ potential) into all vibrational bound states of the 1 3Σg+ is investigated; discussing the influence of the tightness of the trap on the association rate. The results obtained with realistic molecular potentials are compared to those where the atomic interaction is modeled by a regularized δ function (with energy-independent and -dependent scattering lengths).
