Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates: Breakdown and revival — •Dirk Witthaut, Mauro Werder, Stefan Mossmann, and Hans Jürgen Korsch — Fachbereich Physik, TU Kaiserslautern
We investigate the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in a tilted one-dimensional periodic lattice within the mean-field (Gross-Pitaevskii) description.
For weak static fields a BEC carries out Bloch oscillations well-known from the linear case. However, one observes a breakdown of the oscillations due to nonlinear dephasing and pronounced revival phenomena. Breakdown and revival can be explained with an integrable model constructed by an expansion in Wannier-Stark resonance states.
For stronger static fields the system shows a pulsed output, whereas the nonlinearity characteristically deforms the pulses.
