Probing the structure of crystalline ion beams†. — •M. Bussmann, U. Schramm, and D. Habs — LMU München, Department für Physik
We present methods to determine the spatial and temporal structure of
crystalline ion beams at the storage ring PALLAS.
In the PALLAS table top storage ring coasting and bunched crystalline
beams of 24Mg+ ions can be routinely generated using
Doppler laser cooling. Moreover PALLAS serves as a test environment for
laser cooling schemes planned at large storage ring experiments[1].
A new experimental technique to probe the structural characteristics and
dynamics of ion beams by measuring an optically detected Schottky noise
signal of the flurorescent ions is depicted. Accompanying the experiment a
new molecular dynamics package[2] has been developed at the LMU to study
the form and structure of bunched crystalline beams and the dynamics of
the phase transition. The results from simulations are compared to
experimental data.
