Reduced ionization due to nearly separable motion in atoms and C60 — •Manfred Lein — Max-Planck-Institut f. Kernphysik, D-69117 Heidelberg

The barrier-suppression intensity of a system is the laser intensity where the tunneling barrier is pushed below the electron binding energy. It is often used as an estimate of the saturation intensity in strong-field ionization. It is demonstrated here that the common definition of the barrier-suppression intensity should be modified in systems with separable or nearly separable electron motion, including important cases such as hydrogen-like atoms and C60 molecules. For C60, this leads to an additional explanation of ionization suppression, which has been attributed to field-induced polarization previously.
