Seismicity resulting from self-organized critical stress states — •Sebastian Hainzl1 and Gert Zöller2 — 1Institut für Geowissenschaften, Universität Potsdam, POB 601553,14415 Potsdam — 2Institut für Physik,Universität Potsdam, POB 601553,14415 Potsdam
The self-organization of the stress field due to earthquake ruptures and tectonic loading is shown to explain the most conspicuous characteristics of seismicity, namely the Gutenberg-Richter law for the frequency of magnitudes, the Omori law of aftershocks and foreshocks, and accelerated seismic moment release preceding large earthquakes. By means of earthquake simulations and empirical observations, we find that the concepts of critical point behavior and self-organized criticality are suitable for the description of earthquake dynamics.
