An optical novelty filter displays only temporal changes of a signal beam and suppresses the static background. Such a filter can be realized by using a photorefractive material in a two-beam coupling setup. Existing systems work mostly with anorganic crystals, such as BaTiO3, as photorefractive material. One disadvantage is, that these crystals are difficult to produce with unvarying optical quality at low costs. Photorefractive polymers are used as an alternative only in few cases in order to demonstrate their principal applicability for optical novelty filtering. These polymers consist of guest-host systems based on poly(N-vinylcarbazole). Our aim is to optimize this material for a photorefractive novelty filter. The preparation of these polymers and first two-beam coupling experiments are presented in this talk.
