By disperging microsized polystyrene particles in ferrofluid an ideal magneto-rheological model fluid can be synthesized. The nonmagnetic polystyrene particles create holes in the ferrofluid, which appear to posses a magnetic moment corresponding to the amount and suszeptibility of the displaced fluid. Due to the dipolar interactions of the holes, chain formation sets in. We investigate this process in a quasi two dimensional layer inbetween two glass plates via a long distance video microscope. Here the magnetic field is oriented parallel to the plates, and applied in a pulse like manner. The number of particles in the chains and columns are extracted from the pictures. The average length shows to follow a logistic function in time. Moreover, structure formation of the agglomerates under shear flow is experimentally investigated.
