A new beam model for delamination of composite materials — •Frank Raischel1, Ferenc Kun2, and Hans J. Herrmann1 — 1Institut für Computerphysik, Universität Stuttgart, D-70569 Stuttgart — 2Department of Theoretical Physics, University of Debrecen, H-4010 Debrecen
We present a novel model for shear failure of a glued interface between two solid blocks, which is a model system for the fiber-matrix interface in composite materials. The interface is treated as an array of elastic beams, which experience stretching and bending under shear load. Breaking is initiated if the two deformation modes exceed randomly distributed breaking thresholds, and global load sharing following the breaking of one beam can trigger avalanches in the system. We provide theoretical and simulation results for both the macroscopic behaviour and the microscopic dynamics, and compare our findings with experiments and the commmonly used dry fiber bundle models.
