Synchronization of spiral wave motion by spatio-temporal forcing — •Sergey Zykov1, Harald Engel2, Vladimir Zykov2, and Vasilij Davydov1 — 1Moscow Institut of Radioengineering, Electronics and Automation, Russia — 2Institut für Theoretische Physik, Technische Universität Berlin, Germany
A traditional way to control spiral wave motion is to apply an external forcing uniformly to an excitable medium. Here we consider spiral waves in a two-dimensional excitable medium under a spatio-temporal forcing F(x,y,t) = a sin(ωm t + km x), assuming that km r0 ≪ 1, where r0 is the radius of the spiral core. We show, that within a certain synchronization band such forcing induces a spiral wave drift along a straight line, whose orientation depends on the modulation frequency ω m, wavenumber km and the eigen frequency of the spiral wave. It turns out that during this drift the phase of the rotating spiral wave is synchronized with the external forcing. Kinematical description of spiral tip motion is in good agreement with the results of a direct integration of the underlying reaction-diffusion equations.
