The Valles Marineris on Mars are the largest system of linear troughs in the Solar System, spanning more than 3.000 km in E-W direction with depths of up to more than 10 km. In several places, interior layered deposits (ILD) fill parts of the troughs. They may be of volcanic or sedimentary origin. Either way, their presence has profound implications for the formation of the Valles Marineris itself. The High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board the Mars Express mission obtains high-resolution stereo and multispectral images, which are ideal for the geomorphologic analysis of the ILD.
