SIMULATION OF DETECTION PROBABILITIES FOR STEREO PLASTIC — •Muharrem Köten, Lars Berger, Christian T. Steigies, and Robert F. Wimmer-Schweingruber — IEAP-CAU-Kiel, Olshausenstr. 40, D-24098 Kiel

PLASTIC (PLAsma and Suprathermal Ion Composition) is an instrument to analyze the properties of solar wind particles and suprathermal ions in space. It is one of four devices mounted on STEREO (Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory), a NASA mission that is scheduled for launch in 2006. STEREO consists of two identical space probes, that will be launched simultanouesly. The first will lead and the second will lag the earth in its orbit. The two probes will move away from the earth with an angular velocity of 22.5 per year. These two independent eyes will reveal the three dimensional structure of coronal mass ejections.

Solar wind particles and suprathermal ions are fully characterized by their velocity, mass and charge. To determine these physical values is the function of PLASTIC. At first we describe the geometry and inner working of this instrument. Next we present software that was developed to simulate the detection propabilities taking into account the properties of the different parts of PLASTIC and the effects of ion optics.
