Development and application of an improved maximum-likelihood analysis technique for time-of-flight mass spectrometers — •Lars Berger, Muharrem Köten, Christian T. Steigies, and Robert F. Wimmer-Schweingruber — IEAP-CAU Kiel, Olshausenstraße 40, D-24098 Kiel
Modern time-of-flight mass spectrometers which measure the composition of the solar wind, suprathermal and energetic particles give us results of unprecedented quality. This, together with the availability of high-performance computing on the desktop, calls for new, improved analysis methods. Here we present the development of a maximum-likelihood analysis technique which incorparates instrumental properties and finite count rates via Poissonian statistics. We apply it to flight data of the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) and present preliminary results.
