Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) is a well established technique for the production of ultrafine grained materials by severe plastic deformation. We propose a microscale analogue of ECAP. By using sub–millimeter sized channels in a process that is based both on the forcefill technology and severe plastic deformation concept, fibres or wires with ultrafine grain size could be manufactured. In these experiments porous filters with micrometer or submicrometer scale open porosity were used for the pressing of aluminium. First results demonstrate the viability of this approach, to which we refer to as µSPD. The technique can also be used for solid state infiltration of porous ceramic or metallic performs leading to fine grain size composites.
