Ultrathin two-dimensional magnetic systems grown on non-magnetic substrates, introduces new physical properties important for future applications. One such important property is perpendicular surface anisotropy causing the magnetic layer to come out of the plane. In this work we investigate the direction and the surface magnetic properties using the PAC-method. This method has proven to be a highly sensitive technique to investigate the structure and the magnetic properties of surfaces with atomic resolution. In the present experiment single isolated radioactive 111mCd probe atoms were evaporated in situ at 40 K onto 2 MLs of Ni grown on a Pd(001) single crystal. We could determine the magnetic hyperfine field of the Cd adatoms. The results are compared to the values measured for Cd adatoms on bulk Ni single crystals with the same surface orientation. We could conclude that the magnetic response of a non-magnetic impurity (Cd) on the surface of 2 MLs of Ni(100) on Pd bulk, and on the surface of Ni(100) bulk is equal, however, the magnetic hyperfine field of the Cd probes on 2 MLs of Ni comes out of the plane with an angle of about 60.
