Aligned Fe-filled multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were grown perpendicularly to oxidized Si substrates by pyrolysis of ferrocene. Recently, we have reported on encapsulated Fe nanowires having at room temperature the bcc and the fcc phase and possessing a pronounced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with easy axis of magnetization perpendicular to the substrate surface.
Here we present a systematic comparison of the magnetic properties of Fe-filled MWNTs samples having different phase compositions and an establishment of possible correlations between structural and magnetic characteristics of the carbon nanotube filling. It was found that the specific saturation magnetization and the magnetic anisotropy strongly depends on the relative amount of the bcc Fe phase and the bcc Fe crystallite grain size.
