Thin composite films consisting of a magnetic material inside an insulating polymer matrix show very fascinating properties and may be applied in different areas ranging from high density hard disc storage to inductive components useable up and beyond the GHz barrier. We prepared metal-polymer composite films by vapor phase co-deposition. The film structure was characterized by profilometry, EDX and TEM. Depending on deposition parameters and materials we either observe metal clusters or nanocolumns inside a polymer matrix. The cluster nanocomposites are considered to be ideal for high frequency applications due to minimized eddy current losses and a high ferromagnetic resonance frequency. The columnar nanocomposite shows vertically aligned colums of 5-8 nm diameter. Due to small dimensions of the columns and their high shape anisotropy they are promising candidates for high density data storage.
