Alignment of ClF in Argon crystals — •Nina Owschimikow, Toni Kiljunen, and Nikolaus Schwentner — Institut für Experimentalphysik, FU-Berlin, Arnimallee 14, 14195 Berlin

Interaction between a molecule with an anisotropic polarizability and an intense laser field can create alignment of the molecule along the field polarization direction.

In the case of impurity molecules embedded in a solid matrix, the potential created by the matrix defines possible orientations of the guest molecules. Consequently, polarized laser light can be used to selectively manipulate these molecules and to control direction-dependent photochemical reactions.

We choose ClF in solid Argon as a model system, with the ClF occupying a single-substitutional site in the Ar matrix. We grow macroscopic crystals with large grain size and determine the grain orientation by polarization analysis. In this single-crystalline system, we aim to obtain information on the matrix symmetry as well as to control the orientation of the guest molecule.
