Accurate mass measurements on radionuclides are of utmost importance e.g. for nuclear structure studies but also to contribute to tests of the Standard Model. The ISOLTRAP experiment at CERN allows for accurate mass measurements on short-lived radionuclides. They are performed by employing a time-of-flight cyclotron-resonance detection technique by use of a Penning trap, where the ions are excited with a radiofrequency quadrupolar field.
The obtained resolving power is proportional to the time duration for which the quadrupolar excitation is applied. It has been conceived that applying an octupolar excitation instead can improve the resolving power by a factor of 2. The scheme of octupolar excitation is currently being investigated by simulation studies and first results will be presented.
