Tetravalent actinides and their homologues exhibit a strong tendency towards formation of polynuclear species in solution. At the same time the highly charged ions readily undergo hydrolysis. The formation process of colloids is followed by investigating the different steps from the ’free’ hydrated ion at very acidic conditions via hydrolised species and oligomers towards nm-sized-colloids. A recent modification of the ’BME-Albatros’ system will allow to study the element-composition of small colloids by means of trapping and laser vaporisation prior to the TOF-MS.
