In Situ STM study of the intercalation of organic molecules in 1-T TaS2 — •Sujit Kumar Dora and Olaf Magnussen — Institut für Experimentelle und Angewandte Physik, Universität Kiel, Kiel, Germany
It has been know for more than 20 years that transition metal dichalcogenides are ideal host materials for the intercalation of large organic molecules, resulting in materials with strongly modified structural and electronic properties. However, little is known on the atomic-scale mechanisms of the intercalation process. In this study, the electrochemical intercalation/ deintercalation of pyridine and octylamine (0.01 M solutions, pH 4) in 1T-TaS2 was investigated by in-situ electrochemical STM and cyclic voltammetry. The STM observations show characteristic structural changes in the surface morphology during these processes, illuminating the important role of surface defects, such as holes and steps. In particular, the growth of holes and the formation of layers with fractional step heights (1/2 of the 1-T TaS2 layer spacing) were observed.
