Usually barrier discharges (BDs) are characterized by many microdischarges occurring (so-called filamentary mode). But under special conditions they can be operated in a diffuse mode. Diffuse BDs have been investigated in helium, nitrogen and neon by plasma diagnostics and numerical modelling by diffrent authors. It was demonstrated that the diffuse BD in nitrogen is a Townsend-like discharge, while in helium respectively neon the structure of a sub-normal glow-discharge has been investigated (so-called Glow-like mode). This contribution reports results on experimental studies of diffuse BDs in mixtures of nitrogen with the noble gases argon, helium and neon respectively. The discharge voltage and current are measured and spatio-temporally resolved optical emission spectroscopy is performed. It is shown that the discharge remains in the diffuse mode until a relative high admixture of noble gases. The aim of this work is the investigation of the transition between the Townsend- and the Glow-like mode. By this, one can contribute to a better understanding on the elementary processes leading to diffuse as well as filamentary BDs, respectively. In particular the process of pre-ionisation of the gas before the breakdown by nitrogen metastable states and the important role of collisional quenching of these active species will be figured out.
