Observation of intermittent states and nonlinear wave-wave interaction in neon glow discharges — •Ruslan Kozakov, Christian Wilke, and Berndt Bruhn — Institut für Physik, EMA Universität Greifswald, Domstraße 10a, 17489 Greifswald
Nonlinear interaction of two waves is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. In the plasma of a neon glow discharge under certain conditions two waves (s- and p-wave) are known to exist simultaneously. An intermittent behaviour of s- and p-wave interaction is proved by the analisys of the recorded spatio-temporal patterns of light emitted by plasma. Theoretical considerations predict complex dynamics in the transition region between s- and p-waves. Onset of instability is connected with codimension-two bifurcation of Hopf-Hopf type. The analysis of the dynamics is performed based on the two coupled amplitude equations of the Ginzburg-Landau type. Comparison of experimental data and theoretical predictions shows satisfactory agreement. The discrepancies are discussed.
