Dependence of an influence of the perturbation particle on the melting of 2D dusty crystal — •Yuriy Ivanov and André Melzer — Institut für Physik Universität Greifswald
In laboratory dusty plasmas dust particles are trapped in the sheath of a discharge where they arrange in crystalline systems. The phenomenon of melting of Coulomb dust crystals has aroused considerable attention in the last years. Melting occurs in multi-layer systems due to an instability of the interaction between the layers in the sheath. To better understand such melting processes, experiments in Coulomb clusters with a single second-layer particle are investigated. Various parameters in these experiments like gas pressure, plasma power, cluster size and particle diameter have been changed in these experiments. Their influence on the melting is discussed. Advanced techniques for the analysis of the dynamics during the phase transition are applied which allow a detailed investigation of the particle interaction in the sheath.
