Experimental studies of complex plasma fluids — •Martin A. Fink and Gregor E. Morfill — Max Planck Institute for extraterrestrial Physics, Giessenbachstraße, D-85741 Garching

Complex plasmas are ideal systems to study fluid phenomena at the kinetic level. This is because one of its components (complex plasmas consist of ions, electrons, charged microparticles and neutral gas) can be visualized individually and the particle motion can be tracked. In the PK-4 experimental setup we are able to produce linear flows of microparticles. The velocity of such a flow can be varied up to values that are higher than the sound speed. The transition from laminar to turbulent flow while passing a small obstacle is investigated. Moreover the difference between single particle movement and collective behaviour in flows through a Laval nozzle is studied.
