Detection of moving atoms by Gaussian shaped lasers — •Jens Timo Neumann and Gerhard C. Hegerfeldt — Inst. f. Theor. Physik, Univ. Göttingen, Friedrich-Hund-Platz 1, 37077 Göttingen

Recently, it has been proposed to measure the arrival time distributions of moving spread-out quantum particles by means of laser-induced fluorescence. In these models, the laser intensity has been assumed to be piecewise constant in space. We extend this to lasers with a smooth (Gaussian) intensity distribution, present a method to calculate the probability distribution for the first fluorescence photon and compare our results to axiomatic predictions for arrival time distributions.
