Group velocity dispersion measurements of tapered fibers immersed in different liquids — •Sebastian Pricking, Rui Zhang, Diana Türke, and Harald Giessen — Institut für Angewandte Physik, Wegelerstr. 8, D-53115 Bonn

Tapered fibers can be immersed in a variety of liquids. This can change the mode profile and hence the group velocity dispersion of light propagating in such structures. Therefore, supercontinuum generation can be optimized by designing a slightly anomalous, but rather flat dispersion. We designed and fabricated such structures, using acetonitrile, hexane, and normal and heavy water and SMF28 fibers. We measured their group velocity dispersion using a white-light interferometer illuminated by a supercontinuum that was generated in another tapered fiber. We were able to separate the influences of different liquids and different fiber waist thicknesses. The accuracy of our GV measurement was better than five per cent, and the precision of the zero GVD wavelength was less than 50 nm. We compare our experimental results with theoretical simulations based on vector Maxwell calculations and find good agreement.
