Inhomogeneous magnetic fields are widely used in order to confine and control the motion of neutral atoms. We investigate the resonant motion of neutral particles of spin 1 and spin 1/2 in such magnetic traps. In particular we focus on the sideguide, the Ioffe-Pritchard trap and the three-dimensional quadrupole trap. Inspecting the underlying Hamiltonians a variety of symmetries is revealed eventually giving rise to a two-fold degeneracy of the energy levels. In order to compute the energies and lifetimes of a large number of resonances the complex scaling method is employed. We comment on how the lifetime of a trapped particle depends on its angular momentum. Thereby we state under which conditions quasi-bound states which possess long lifetimes can be achieved. An effective scalar Schrödinger equation describing such states is derived.
