It has recently been shown that photoassociation with a chirped picosecond pulse creates a molecular wave packet in the excited state which comprises a few vibrational levels and which is spatially focussed at certain times [1]. In a second step, this molecular wave packet needs to be transferred to the ground electronic state to create stable molecules. If the second pulse is short, the system is reduced to an effective two-level system. Adiabatic transfer in this effective two-level system is compared to an optimal control approach.
