Atom chips provide a promising route towards the robust and scalable implementation of quantum information processors. A serious threat for atomic coherence are electromagnetic field fluctuations radiated by the chip structure. We derive here the lifetime of magnetically trapped atoms above a planar, layered structure, using numerical calculations based on the exact magnetic Green function and multilayer reflection coefficients. We find a good agreement with experimental data obtained in a wire trap that is shifted in the lateral and perpendicular directions relative to the chip wire. The comparison shows that the structure below the topmost layer (3µm evaporated gold) has significant impact on the trap lifetime.
