Two phase locked laser beams were used in a Raman configuration to couple the atomic collisional state to a bound molecular state. The observed Autler-Townes spectra show a dramatic suppression of photoassociation losses on resonance. This is a strong signature of coherence of the atom-molecule transition. Suppression of losses was also recently observed in first measurements on thermal samples [1,2]. We find that using a BEC largely improves the visibility of this effect. As pointed out by Bergmann et al. [3] this result is relevant in connection with recent proposals [4] to use STIRAP for converting atomic BECs into molecular BECs. We estimate the feasibility of STIRAP based on our experimental data.
