Bose Einstein Condensation of 87Rb atoms in quasi-electrostatical dipole traps formed by a focussed CO2-laser beam has been demonstrated in recent experiments [1]. Due to the limited initial number of atoms in such dipole traps, the final atom number in the condensate which is achieved after evaporative cooling is usually quite low.
We present the current status of a new experiment, in which we combine a CO2-laser trap (λ=10.6 µm) with Raman sideband cooling [2] and a tightly focussed dipole trap at 1064 nm to produce a 87Rb-condensate without evaporation.
