One main goal for the future of white LEDs is general lighting. The LEDs have the potential to become the most efficient light source for white light as they are for coloured light already. Many technical and economical problems have to be solved on this way. In the past, many emotionalized discussions took place and we want to use our over many years accumulated knowledge on LEDs for an objective characterisation of the state of the art as well as for the comparability to standard light sources. One example and latest results for white LEDs are the radial resolved colourness of white light. We measured the colour-temperature of different types of LEDs over the whole hemisphere with a resolution of 5 K. All angle related optical parameters can be measured over the. We developed a thermal optimized high-power LED and thermal management for application in LED-modules. Thus we investigate and compare several experimental setups and theoretical simulations with different software-solutions. To determine the total thermal resistante RJA we use a simple Bias-Voltage-Setup, wavelenght-shift with junction temperatur and direct thermographie with optical resolution of some 10 µm. We find comparable results for the first two ones and little shifted values for the last one in respect to the disturbed ambient by the missing potting to measure chip temperature.
