Large two-dimensional spatial soliton lattices can be generated in saturable nonlinear optical materials exploiting the balance of the nonlinear refractive index modulation with diffraction and the parallelism of optics.

We describe theoretically and generate experimentally the formation of these soliton lattices in photorefractive materials and discuss their stability. An enhanced stability of such lattices is achieved by exploiting the anisotropy and controlling the relative phase between adjacent solitons due to coherent soliton interaction. We show the guiding properties of these lattices as well as different ways of manipulating individual soliton channels using phase-sensitive control beams with different transverse distributions.
