Of late there has been growing interest in studying the flow properties in micro-fluidic devices which are often used in mixing, sorting and cell culturing in many biological and chemical applications [1]. To understand the flows in this micro-scale regime, efficient diagnostic tools have to be developed which are non-invasive and reliable. In this contribution, we present an optical, non-invasive, photorefractive-based novelty filter [2] system which can be used for direct visualization and measurement of changes in the concentration of two mixing transparent fluids in a micro-channel. We show that, with this system, concentration changes as small as 0.1% can be detected in real-time. We also demonstrate that the time constants of the order of a few hundred milliseconds to a few days can be achieved thus making it suitable for applications involving the observation of fast processes (eg: jet flows) as well as slow processes (eg: cell mutations).
