We demonstrate the ultrafast all-optical deflection of spatial solitons formed in an AlxGa1−xAs slab waveguide by exploiting the intensity dependent refractive index (Kerr nonlinearity) of the material. The experiment is performed with an 76MHz optical parametric oscillator, producing femtosecond pulses at two wavelengths: 1590nm (signal), used to generate, and 1715nm (idler) to deflect the spatial soliton. The idler beam, focused onto the structure from the top, is used to steer the spatial soliton generated with the signal beam. The size of the spatial deflection is >1µm and occurs on a 200fs timescale. Larger deflections are possible at higher intensities. Beam propagation calculations are employed to simulate the results.
