Treatment Planning for Ion Beams: Status and Developments — •Michael Kraemer — GSI, 64291 Darmstadt, Planckstr. 1
Since 1997 a radiotherapy pilot project is running at GSI (Darmstadt) treating tumour patients with scanned pencil beams of carbon ions. In this context a treatment planning software TRiP98 was developped for clinical use, which supports this kind of active ion beam delivery, including physical and radiobiological beam modelling, dose calculation and optimization, and dosimetric verification. More than 200 patients have been successfully planned and treated so far.
This contribution will report on the status and ongoing developments of TRiP98, in particular in view of the requirements of the dedicated clinic facility (HIT) currently being built at the Radiological Clinic Heidelberg. Physical and radiobiological beam modelling is currently extended to include proton and helium ions in addition to our established carbon ion data base. Calculations of absorbed dose as well as biological effects are verified with experimental data taken at GSI and the MPI Heidelberg. Calculation speed for biological effects can be improved significantly by suitable approximations without sacrificing the required accuracy. Thus it is possible to perform simultaneous optimization of multiple ion fields with the biological dose as objective function with reasonable computation times.
