Design and Performance of a Beam-Calorimeter for an ILC Detector — •Vladimir Drugakov, Wolfgang Lohmann, and Achim Stahl — DESY, Platanenellee 6, 15738 Zeuthen
The BeamCal, a calorimeter surrounding the beam-pipe of the ILC detector, will be hit by a large number of electrons and positrons originating from beamstrahlung photon conversions, carrying over 20 TeV of energy per bunch crossing. Single high energy electrons should be identified and measured on top of the depositions from beamstrahlung remnants. The identification is particularly important to veto backgrounds in new particle searches. The size and spectral distribution of beamstrahlung remnants also allows the determination of beam parameters.
Design options based on a diamond/tungsten sandwich and heavy element crystals are discussed. Results are presented from Monte Carlo simulations on the expected performance of the calorimeter.
