The new hybrid air shower simulation code CONEX is presented and compared in detail to CORSIKA predictions. In CONEX, Monte-Carlo simulation of high energy interactions is combined with a fast numerical solution of cascade equations. This allows the fast and realistic simulation of shower longitudinal profiles at ultra-high energies. CONEX does not only calculate particle numbers (shower size), but also energy spectra and energy deposit profiles, which makes it an ideal tool for simulating the expected signal in fluorescence detectors.
