Search for axions with the CCD-detector at CAST(CERN AXION SOLAR TELESCOPE) — •Donghwa Kang, H. Fischer, J. Franz, F.H. Heinsius, and K. Königsmann — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Freiburg
The CAST experiment at CERN searches for solar axions with energies in the keV range. The axions can be converted to photons in the 9 Tesla LHC prototype superconducting magnet. At the end of a 10 m long dipole magnet, three detectors of different kind were installed, which are sensitive in the energy range up to 10 keV. The magnet is moving ± 8 ∘ vertically and ± 40 ∘ horizontally to follow the sun. The data presented here were taken with a Charge-Coupled-Device system located in the focus of an X-ray mirror telescope. The CCD detector is operated at low temperature and has a good quantum efficiency. In this talk the first results from the analysis of the 2003 data will be presented, reducing the upper limit of the axion-photon coupling constant by a factor 5 compared to previous axion search experiments. The project is supported by BMBF.
