LOPES is a LOFAR Prototype Station aimed to measure radio pulses from air showers. LOFAR is a new digital radio interferometer, that is being build in The Netherlands. Working in the frequency range of 10–210 MHz it is well suited to measure the radio emission of air showers.
These radio pulses were measured during the late 1960ies and the 1970ies , but difficulties with radio interference made these measurements nearly impossible in the last decades. The advent of high bandwidth ADCs made it possible to store the whole waveform information of the radio signal in digital form. This allows us to suppress the interference with digital filtering and beam forming.
LOPES is set up at the site of the KASCADE-Grande air shower array. The data from a well tested air shower array helps us with our pulse reconstruction and allows us to calibrate the radio pulses with other air shower data.
The talk will present the technology of LOPES with focus on the algorithms used to detect the radio pulses and present the first scientific results.
