Exposure to heavy metals caused by electronic devices — •Dieter F. Ihrig1, Markus Zier1, Marko Hanke1, and Christiane Ihrig2 — 1FH Suedwestfalen, Iserlohn, Germany — 2Spurenstofftechnik GbR, Menden, Germany
Electronic devices content at lot of harmful substances like heavy metals or polychlorinated biphenyl. Fluorescent coatings for example removed from fluorescent tubes have to be deposited in an underground disposal site in order to the German waste law. A survey was made to get more information about the exposure during electronics waste recycling. Results of this project are presented. In a second project heavy metals were measured in dust and human urine to find correlations between air monitoring and bio monitoring. Problems of heavy metal analytics in biological matrices esp. human urine are discussed. Results from measurement on urine from workers in electronic waste recycling plants, workers in electronic workshops and non-burden persons are presented and discussed. The projects were funded by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (FIOSH) and the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).
