A multichannel pyrometric system for experiments with high energy density (HED) matter generated by intense heavy ion beam — •Pavel Ni — 64291,Planckstrasse 1,Plasmaphysik,GSI-Darmstadt

A fast multi-channel radiation pyrometer has been developed for precise temperature measurements of high-energy-density (HED) matter generated by intense heavy ion beams. Time evolution of thermal radiation emitted by a beam-heated target matter during heating and cooling phases is recoded at 11 wavelengths in visible and near-infrared spectral regions with 5 ns temporal resolution. Emission is collected from a 400 um spot at the target surface by an objective made from two off-axis parabolic mirrors and transmitted to the spectral analyser via quartz fibers. Signals from detectors are recoded by a 24-channel digitizer. Absolute calibration of each channel gives immediately values of brightness temperatures and allows approximation to the true temperature by fitting all records to the Planck formula taking in account the emissivity correction. The developed instrument has been successfully used in recent HIHEX experiments at GSI-Darmstadt. In these experiments, intense (2-4*109 ions, compressed to 130-250 ns bunches) beams of 238U ions uniformly heated thin (250 um) foils of various metals, including lead, tin, tungsten, tantalum, aluminium and copper. The measured target temperatures were in the range from 1800 K to 10000 K.
