A collisional radiative model for argon and the simulation of Laser Induced Fluorescence measurements — •Tilmann Lunt — Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

In order to compute the visible spectra by means of a collisional radiative model it is necessary to have detailed knowledge of atomic data. In particular the rate coefficients for collisional transitions are difficult to find. A model for argon which only takes into account electron impact excitation rate coefficients for optically allowed transitions approximated by Seaton and Regemorters formula, in addition to those for ionization and recombination, is presented here. The comparison with absolutely calibrated spectra measured in PSI-2 is already satisfactory: The total intensity of the 20 strongest lines is of the same order of magnitude with the relative intensities deviating by less than 20%.
With the help of the model an optimal pair of transitions for Laser Induced Fluorescence can be found. Furthermore repopulation times of the (metastable) initial levels are obtained.
