A laboratory experiment for the simulation of solar flares — •Denis Glushkov and Henning Soltwisch — Institut für Experimentalphysik V, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, 44780 Bochum, Germany

Hot, magnetized plasmas are complex objects with complicated dynamics. Prominent examples are arc-shaped solar flares observed in the sun corona. The processes controlling their evolution and local plasma dynamics are still not well understood. To simulate the behavior of solar flares an experimental setup has been designed and built. It consists of a U-magnet, producing an arc-shaped magnetic field above two electrodes. One electrode is charged up to +3kV, the other symmetrically down to -3kV relative to the vacuum chamber. Hydrogen is injected through holes in the electrodes, and an electrical discharge is initiated. The current channel is compressed by the pinch effect and stabilized by the arc-shaped magnetic field. Progress on building this simulation experiment is reported and the experimental data obtained so far are presented.
