The profiles of Balmer lines for neutral hydrogen are calculated using a microscopic quantum-statistical approach, assuming local thermal equilibrium (S. Günter et al. 1991). Self absorption is taken into account by solving a one-dimensional radiation transport equation for a plasma layer (S. Sorge et al. 2000), the bound-free and free-free contributions to the continuous spectrum are also considered. The calculated synthetic spectra are compared with the experimental results (R. Radtke and K. Günter 1986) of Hα, Hβ and Hγ for plasmas generated by a wall-stabilized discharge arc in a temperature range (13000−22000) K and the corresponding electron density (1023−1024) m−3. The present results are in good agreement with other calculated and experimentally measured spectra.
